At STM, we embrace women’s achievements and reflect on how far we’ve come in creating equal opportunities.

On International Women’s Day, we asked some of our team members to share their thoughts. Hope, our Client Services Apprentice, shares how she celebrates the everyday heroes and the importance of empowering the women around her.

What does International Women’s Day mean to you personally?

International Women’s Day is not just about celebrating the famous, successful women we know, but also about honouring the everyday heroes—our friends, family, and those who may not always be in the spotlight but have made a significant impact in our lives. It’s a time to recognise the women in our personal circles who inspire and support us. Additionally, it’s about reflecting on the historical moments where women’s contributions, even in small ways, paved the path for the freedoms and opportunities we sometimes take for granted today.

Who is a woman (past or present) who inspires you and why?

The woman who inspires me the most is my mum, along with my nanna. Both have been my role models since I was very young. They are incredibly selfless and always put the needs of those around them first while remaining loyal and dependable. These traits have shaped the way I view the world and how I approach relationships.

What advice would you give to women who are early in their careers?

I’d advise putting yourself out there and not being afraid to take on new opportunities when they come your way. Don’t get too comfortable in situations that feel safe because it can hold you back from bigger, better things. Sometimes, you have to take a chance and push past the fear of uncertainty.

What do you think workplaces can do to create better opportunities for women to thrive?

I believe it's important to celebrate the milestones women reach, whether it’s big achievements or personal wins. It’s also great to have fun social events where women can come together, build connections, and empower each other. In the workplace, these kinds of moments help create a supportive atmosphere where everyone feels encouraged to grow and collaborate.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned about gender equality in the workplace?

I have learned the importance and impact of a business acknowledging women in the workplace. Sometimes people can be sexist without intentionally doing it. It’s important to make it known to them however in an educating way.

How do you celebrate or empower women in your personal life?

In my personal life, I celebrate and empower women by making sure to acknowledge and appreciate the amazing women around me. Whether it’s through offering support, sharing their accomplishments, or just being a good listener, with my friends and family I want to be an open ear for them to open up to.

What’s one skill or quality you’ve gained from a woman in your life that has influenced who you are today?

My mum always told me that sometimes, even if you don’t feel seen right away, your hard work will eventually be recognised over time. While it may not always feel fair, sticking it out and staying consistent is what truly pays off in the end. It’s a reminder that perseverance and dedication are key, even when the recognition doesn’t come immediately. The effort you put in will speak for itself in the long run.

What does ‘Accelerate Action’ mean to you, and how do you put it into practice in your own life or work?”

‘Accelerate Action’ means moving forward with purpose and urgency—taking deliberate steps to make progress quickly rather than waiting around. Personally, in my own life not let opportunities fall onto my lap but make them happen for myself. If I am not working hard to achieve something, where is the pleasure in that!

If you could have dinner with any woman in history, who would it be and why?

I would have to sit down with Princess Diana. She was such a fascinating and compassionate figure, known for her dedication to charity and her ability to connect with people from all walks of life. I’d love to hear about her personal experiences, the challenges she faced both publicly and privately, and how she navigated life under intense scrutiny. And off the topic, but I have to mention I would ask her wild conspiracy theory questions about what really happened in her car accident!
